Program Description
The Social Services Technician and Case Aide course assists clients in identifying needs and then obtaining relevant social services in the community required to meet those needs. They work under the supervision of a social worker or case manager within the scope of practice in their state and jurisdiction. Social services technicians and case aides may research a client’s case history, assist in interviewing a new client and family to assess needs, assist in crisis intervention, and assist in counseling clients about relevant social programs and services. Clients for social services vary and include children and youth, older adults, those with mental health and substance abuse disorders, homeless, victims of crimes and domestic violence, those with physical and mental impairments.
This program is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support case managers and clients in accessing vital social services. This course focuses on practical assistance, resource connection, and administrative support within a case management framework and is designed for the entry-level staff.
Program Objectives
- Identify the various levels of social service provisions at the local, state, and federal jurisdictions and the interconnectedness of agencies.
- Describe the core principles of social welfare.
- Briefly identify milestones in the history of social service provision.
- Define the stages of case management and the role of social services personnel within the framework.
- Identify common challenges faced by diverse client populations, including poverty, homelessness, mental health, substance abuse, disabilities, aging, and children.)
- Explain the impact of trauma and adverse childhood experiences.
- Describe eligibility criteria, application processes, and benefits for key programs.
- Explain the referral process and interagency collaboration.
- Explain the legal and ethical principles and requirements related to social services.
- Discuss the importance of documentation and record-keeping.
- Demonstrate knowledge of community resources and how they can be accessed.
- Demonstrate how to research and identify new resources.
- Describe the impact of social determinants of health.
- Explain how to conduct respectful and empathetic interviews with clients from diverse backgrounds.
- Discuss strategies for building rapport and establishing trust with clients.
- Explain the communication process, including modes of communication, active listening, feedback, and verbal and non-verbal aspects.

However, if you choose the RTW Externship Placement (as opposed to Job Placement), please note the following requirements:- Drug Screen and Background Checks are Required: Must be completed prior to externship placement.
- Weekday Externship Availability Required: You must be available Monday through Friday, between 7am – 5pm for a minimum of 4 hours per day. You may attend 2, 3, 4 or 5 days per week.
- Evening and Weekend Externships Are NOT Available: Except for certain Pharmacy Technician externship placements which may have evening and weekend opportunities.
- Externship Must be Completed On-Site at the Employer Facility - Remote Externships Are Not Available: Except for certain limited remote Medical Billing & Coding (MBC) externships which may be completed remotely.
